Flannery O’ Connor’s masterpiece Wise Blood aroused more and more concerns of the Chinese critics, yet the analysis on personality deficiencies of the characters remains incomplete. Consequently, with the method of close reading and on the basis of previous studies, the present thesis attempts to analyze the characters’ personality deficiencies under the guide of Jungian archetypal criticism, which will contribute a new apprehension to this novel.Through an in-depth analysis on the behaviours and monologues of the characters in Wise Blood, the present thesis initially explores the personality deficiencies of the characters in this novel. Besides, by analyzing their tragic fates the present thesis expounds that their misfortunes are caused by their personal deficiencies. Finally, the exploration of the reasons which causes their personality deficiencies, detects the origin of their tragic fates.Based upon the above analysis, the thesis concludes that beneath the personality deficiency, there is strong destructive power which can cause the tragic fates of the characters. Furthermore, by interpreting Wise Blood from Jungian archetypal insights, the present thesis will shed a new light for analyzing the tragedy of the characters in it.
