The wall painting is one of the most valuable art relics. It not only reflects the conditions of social life at the ancient time, but also witnesses the development and change of history and culture. The wall painting at Mogao Grottoes is representative. However, after thousands of years, various environmental factors and human factors make the wall painting occur a variety of diseases. A lot of studies show that salt damage is one of the main causes to produce disease, salt damage is considered as the cancer of paintings, and so far there are no effective protective measures.In order to save the endangered mural, people in different times have taken many repair measures. They researched the mechanism of the disease and application of protection materials, but all kinds of exploration had not been used for the application effect of protection materials. This investigation had paid attention to that problem at the first time. The simulation samples modelled on the traditional craft of Mogao Grottoes murals. The simulation samples made in this way had the characteristics of the typical, uniform and quantitative. That made the sample piece closer to the actual murals than the previous simulation sample. Using the simulation samples to modeled on the paint loss and layer loss diseases, and repaired the simulation diseases by five typical protect materials which had been used at Mogao Grottoes. Simulating the practical environment extreme conditions in Dunhuang, establishing the damage cycle experiments, then making the samples in the cycle, we can test the height and quality of the sample every day. Through this experiment, we can get the conclusions about the mechanism of the disease and application effect of protection materials from the damage samples. A series of analysis detection technology had been used to detect the damage sample, such as the contact Angle, permeability, water content, porosity analytical testing etc., through the test results to evaluate and research the performance of protect materials.
