Chinese traditional painting enjoys a time-honored history. Since thousands of years ago, generations of painters have constantly improved, supplemented, renovated and developed the excellent tradition of Chinese painting. Meanwhile, they have created diversified forms and techniques that show distinct national style, which has thus brought forth painting language system with Chinese characteristics. Though it hasn’t developed into intangible cultural heritage, its inherent aesthetic thinking, aesthetic taste, language, and way of expression peculiar to Chinese nation show the property of intangible cultural heritage. Moreover, the property of intangible cultural heritage of Chinese painting has been proved by the Four Treasures of the Study it lives by as well as the calligraphy and seal cutting which have been listed as intangible cultural heritage and known as the member of Chinese four top cultures like itself. In the face of modernization and new concept, what should Chinese traditional painting do? Should the Chinese spirit of Chinese paint be inherited or abandoned? Is the bottom line of Chinese painting supposed to be protected? All these are the unavoidable problems for Chinese painters. This paper attempts to explore and analyze the problems such as the inheritance, development, tradition, and innovation of Chinese traditional painting from the perspective of intangible cultural heritages.
