Vocabulary is regarded as one of the fundamental components of language. As the foundation of linguistic performance, vocabulary plays a critical role in the entire process of language learning. To master the vocabulary learning strategies can make vocabulary learning more effective and efficient, which will lay a solid foundation for language learning. Although English learning in non-English major college students is characterized as autonomic learning, there exist many difficulties such as limited time for learning and exposure to learning English, tough task of English exams and deficiency of professional instruction. Therefore the study of vocabulary learning strategies is quite significant for learning vocabulary thereby for learning English.Three major theories of language learning strategies which include Oxford’s direct strategies and indirect strategies (2008). Cohen’s language learning strategies and language use strategies (2000). and O’Malley and Chamot’s metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies and social strategies (1990) are systematically studied in this paper. On the basis of studying the different classifications and definitions of language learning strategy, the author mainly chooses O’Malley and Chamot’s language learning strategies as the principal theory to study vocabulary learning strategies.The study of vocabulary learning strategies for non-English majors is explicated from four aspects. Firstly, in chapter one, the classification of vocabulary learning strategies is made based on the theory of language learning strategies through literature review from aboard and home. Secondly, in chapter two. an investigation is made to show the situation of using vocabulary learning strategies by non-English majors. Findings are found out through the analysis of investigation carefully designed. Thirdly, in chapter three, seven ways of using vocabulary learning strategies are put forward based on the findings of the investigation. Finally, in conclusion, the author makes some suggestions on vocabulary teaching.
