Lucien Goldman is a distinguished literary theorist in the West in the20th century, whose theory of tragedy is of great uniqueness, leaving much space to be further explored. This article mainly discusses his theory of tragedy on the basis of its source, connotation as well as value. The first part conducts theoretical analyses on the background of Kant’s totally, Lukacs’s tragedy philosophy and Pascal’s philosophy on " God, world and human". The second part elaborates the dialectic basis of his theory of tragedy, and three core elements of tragedies and introduces and comments on tragic character’s way of struggling. The last part explores the theoretical value of Goldman’s theory of tragedy within the context of both definition of tragedy based on moral values and tragedy theories from a cultural point of view.
