Time words, as a group of Chinese common words are many, has attractedacademic attention all the time. At present, no matter in Ancient Chineseor Modern Chinese research field, scholars have made remarkableachievements. The studies of Ancient Chinese and Modern Chinese time wordsare slightly different. They focus on morphology and syntax in ModernChinese, but focus on dating and special book in Ancient Chinese. Amongthem, there are a lot of special books and date research achievements aboutthe Qin and Han Dynasties and the Medieval Chinese.Medieval Chinese inherited from the ancient Chinese, and developedinto the modern Chinese, which plays a vital role in the long ancientChinese history. There are different views on the definition of MedievalChinese. The “Medieval Chinese" mentioned by this paper refers to theChinese of Eastern Han Dynasty, Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties,Sui Dynasty, Tang Dynasty. There are lots of “short” time words inMedieval Chinese. This paper will study on semantic origin and evolution,syntactic structures of Medieval Chinese "short" time words by analyzingits development history and sorting out the same grammatical structureof the words, and make the transverse grammatical meaning comparison andthe longitudinal historical comparison.This paper will adopt the methods of the description and analysis,synchronic study and diachronic study, quantitative analysis andqualitative analysis, exhaustive study and example analysis, case studyand systematic study to discuss the "short" time words, to realize themeaning of words more precise and to recognize the essence.This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter isintroduction of the writing background and corpus, and definition of time.The second chapter is the key chapter, which is comparison and interpretation of research object from diachronic and synchronic view.The third chapter emphasizes on discussion of time words aboutindividual semantic content and common grammatical phenomena. The fourthchapter is the summary description.
