In the modern novel history of America, Sherwood Anderson is of special significance. At the end of19th century and the beginning of the20th century, with the development of the Industrial Revolution, machine production was in full swing, and the division of labor is more sectionalized, which makes the American society increasingly commercialized and money omnipotent. People’s spiritual crisis in this period has become the focus of attention of novelists. As a representative writer of this period, Sherwood Anderson, through his works which depict the real situation of the townsfolk of the Mid-west was to reveal the people’s desires at heart.This article is based on Winesburg, Ohio. which focuses on a symbolic idea "escape " Through the analysis of some heroes in the novel, our author tries to find out the reason and the implication " escape".This article is divided into five parts, the preface briefly describes the life of Anderson and the escape as the object of study the reason.The first chapter describes in detail the escape by some heroes, including Elmer Cowley, the son of richman’s, Elizabeth Willard and George Willard, which summarized the four means the escape adopted.The second chapter analyses the causes of their escape, and then explains the basicl reasons of their escapes.The third chapter points out the significance of the escape inheritance and development of the traditional escapism in American culture,search for tradition and the pursuit of gender harmony,Finally, at the end of the article, our author points out:Anderson describes the stories of those marginal group with continuous self-conflict who live in the areas of cultural collision, character collision. He hopes to tell us that no matter how the social values change, the marginal population has the opportunity to examine their own hearts. Their human nature will not be engulfed in the floods of history.
