| Zhanjiang Cantonese folk songs refer to the ones sung in Zhanjiang Cantonese spoken bypeople in Zhanjiang city proper and Suixi, Lianjiang,Wuchuan counties. The thesis consists offour chapters, discussing four different issues.The first chapter introduces Zhanjiang dialects, namely, Min dialect, Cantonese and Hakka,and their corresponding folk songs, i.e. Zhanjiang Leizhou folk songs, Cantonese folk songs andHakka folk songs. This chapter analyzes phonetic features of Zhanjiang Cantonese, coversdiscriminance and collection of Zhanjiang Cantonese, and introduces in detail the sub-categoriesof Zhanjiang Cantonese folk songs,that is,Mount Songs, Water Songs, Fisherman’s Songs,SeaSongs, which are named after the singing environment, and Doggerels, Children’s Songs,Puppet-show Songs, Wooden-fish-beating Ballad,Baixi Lyrics, and so on.The second chapter discusses the rhyming basis and patterns of Zhanjiang Cantonese folksongs. The author argues that the rhyming of Zhanjiang Cantonese folk songs is based on thelocal Cantonese rhymes rather than on traditional Poetic Rhymes, or on "Thirteen Rhymes" inmodern Chinese northern poetry; then it analyzes rhyming patterns, such as rhyming in evensentences, the same rhyme in every sentence, a-b-a-b rhyming, rhyming with the same Chinesecharacter, the same rhyme in several sentences, irregular rhyming.The third chapter focuses on ancient Chinese and local dialectical words, finding out andanalyzing several scores of such words from many local folk songs. Reiterative locution iscovered in this chapter; five reiterative locution modes are summed up.The fourth chapter analyzes with some examples the rhetorical devices such as figure ofspeech, pun, hyperbole, anadiplosis,assimilation,metonymy, selfquestioning and answering,parataxis,answering a question with a question in Zhanjiang Cantonese folk songs.The appendix lists the phonetic systems applied in local Cantonese of Zhanjiang city proper,Meilu town of Wuchuan county, the other places of Wuchuan county, Suixi and Lianjiangcountie and289Zhanjiang Cantonese folk songs. |
