The verb is the core of the sentence, traditionally Chinese scholars showed great attention to the research of Chinese verbs. In recent years, the study of new words and meanings became a hot spot, but the classical words with ancient meanings were out in the cold. In this paper, I will research the verbs marked "<book>" in Modern Chinese Dictionary, comprehensive study the characteristics of this part of the verbs.This paper begins with a brief introduction to the reasons of choosing the topic, review the research of this subject, explain the purpose and necessary of this topic, introduce the corpus source, research methods and structural arrangements.Second, summarize the total amount and characteristics of the verbs marked with <book> briefly. Summarize the total of the verbs marked with<book>. Review the debate among the old scholars with the conceptions:ancient words, classical words and historical words systematically, combine their perspectives of the name and characteristics of the classical Chinese words leaved over in modern Chinese, sort out the introductions to the words in some important modern Chinese textbooks, put forward my own views.Third, analyze the characteristics of the verbs marked with<book> from multiple perspectives, and summer up the law. I will focus on:the structural features of the verbs marked with<book>; language style and presentation of content limit the use of this kind of verbs; these verbs retained from ancient Chinese to modern Chinese, the active part of the verbs show some characteristics of Chinese traditional culture; the activity level of some of the meanings of the verbs were seriously imbalance.Forth, statistics the use frequency of the verbs marked with<book>. Basis on the number of search results in the Peking University Corpus, I classify the verbs as high frequency words, middle frequency words, low frequency words and dead words.Fifth, introduce the practical significance in language applications of the study. On the one hand, introduce the revelation of the frequency levels to the choice of words in dictionary compilation, I suggest to delete the dead words; on the other hand, introduce the revelation of the cultural characteristics of the verbs marked with <book> to verb teaching, I suggest to scope the teaching verbs by the actual frequency of the verb using, and explore the problem need to pay attention to when to use the verbs marked with<book>.Finally, there’s a summary and some inadequacies of this article.
