The Middle20th century marks the revolutionary development in Chinese cultureand art in line with the vast transformation in both society and politics, which bringsforth a multitude of schools and scholars on the stage of Chinese painting and castsbrilliant and distinctive spectacles. It is during this critical and revolutionary period ofChinese painting that “Chang’an School”, a creative group in Xi’an with the Xi’anbranch Shaanxi Artists Association as the core, starts to emerge and develop, andshedding fresh light on the course of Chinese painting.Based on the mature growth in art market, several monumental works in Chang’anSchool have received tense attention and due admiration. As the typical representatives,Zhao Wangyun, Shi Lu, He Haixia has been loyal to the principle of “hold tight traditionin one hand, and life in another” in their pursuits so as to mirror the new society andnew life via realistic paintings of wither portraits or landscape in their works. Thereforeit is noted that a distinctive style with heavy locality comes into being in Chinesepainting, which centers on northwestern style and loess plateau landscape via originaltechnique so as to produce different artistic conception and unique image, giving greatimpact on Chinese painting as a whole at that time, in particular its innovative choiceover the theme of the painting. Each works in Chang’an School is deeply etched in lifeand thus inspires all kinds of sympathy, no matter who the author is or what specifictheme is chosen.The thesis fully unveils the spiritual essence of Chang’an School and its influenceover Chinese painting via analysis on the research methodology, locality and art value.Three masters in this area has been targeted for research on their personality, mentality,sensitivity, and creativity, namely Zhao Wangyun, Shi Lu, He Haixia, so as to profile on the history of Chang’an School and vision the prospect. Ultimately the thesis aims toprobe into the characteristics of local painting school and the features of Chinesepainting of varied regions, seeking new modes and new themes in Chinese painting andthe tendency of art personality. It is expected that positive step forward can be made inthe thesis for research and development of Chang’an School.
