This thesis adopts the quantitative research method, doing research andmaking analysis of HIT students’ intercultural awareness. From the questionnairedone by HIT English majors and non-English majors, the writer draws theconclusion and analyzes the discrepancy of the degree of intercultural awarenessbetween the English majors and the non-English majors and then gives somecorresponding explanations for the specific differences. This paper firstly analyzes some basic concepts, such as language and culture, intercultural awareness and intercultural communication, and interculturalawareness and intercultural communicative competence. Then it draws theconclusion that intercultural awareness plays a crucial role in foreign languageteaching and learning. From the above, it can be seen that the study of HITstudents’ intercultural awareness has its own theoretical and practical significance. From the results of the questionnaire, the author can see that the interculturalawareness of HIT English majors is a little bit higher than that of the non-Englishmajors, which is correspondent with our expectations. However, due to the greatlydifferent percentages of male students and female students between the Englishmajors and the non-English majors, some results are out of our expectations, which bring forth new challenges for the future studies. This thesis compares the specific differences between HIT English majorsand non-English majors through empirical analysis, which can give us an overallunderstanding of the general situation of HIT students’ intercultural awareness. And this paper can bring a positive amelioration to the future studies of foreignlanguage teaching at HIT, because it can also give instructions to foreign languageteaching, which will contribute to improving HIT students’ intercultural awareness in the future.
