Chinese culture is widespread and far-reaching from the origin. Among them,Journey to the West has great impact on Japan, and been adapted by Japanese animationfor many times. However, because of the influence of the localization and otakuzation,Journey to the West has undergone different degrees of variation in the process ofadaptation. Therefore, both the cause of this variation and its enlightenment on thevariation of Chinese animation have some value and space for research.This paper can be mainly divided into six chapters. The first chapter is mainlyabout the review of the history and research status of variation study on Journey to theWest in the Japanese animation. By fully comprehending previous research findings,and absorbing their research methodologies, the necessity and innovation of this paperwill be proposed.The second chapter will sort out the utilization of the materials in Journey to theWest in the Japanese animation. As a Chinese classical book, the influence of Journeyto the West in the Japanese animation is immeasurable, which is throughout the entirecourse of the development of animation. In different stages of its development, there aredifferent characteristics for the utilization of the materials from Journey to the West.The third chapter will analyze localization of the material of Journey to the West inJapanese animation. First of all, due to the unique view of the strong worship and crisisawareness included in the Japanese traditional culture, variation has obviously occurredin the Journey to the West on motif, introducing the subject of “invincible hero”,“science omnipotence”,“doomsday" and other unique characteristics of the Japaneseculture in Japanese animation. In addition, authentic Japanese elements have been addedon the original appearance, clothing and props of characters.The fourth chapter, from the perspective of the otaku culture, will analyze theotaku characteristic of Journey to the West by Japanese animation. The Tanbi cultureand the moe culture included in otaku culture lead to obvious variation on motif andappearance in Journey to the West by Japan’s animation. Tanbi culture has injected thelove between men in the animation of Journey to the West in Japan. Moreover, in moeculture, mutations occur in the appearances and personalities of characters, showing theelements of moe and highlighting the character’s beautiful appearance and taming personality.The fifth chapter aims at introducing the successful use of Chinese traditionalliterary theme in Japanese animation and puts forward some suggestions to Chinesecartoon. The paper has pointed out that if Chinese cartoons want to develop culturalconnotation and swift the asymmetric phenomenon in cross-cultural communication,they should adhere to the principle of cultural localization and pay more attention toconducting guidance actively on subculture industry and giving full play to positiveenergy of subculture industry.Chapter six is the conclusion part. It has pointed out some shortcomings of thispaper, which provides references for following researchers to conduct further studiesfrom other perspectives.
