| Michelle Obama, America’s first African-American First Lady is known as a perfectwoman who combined wisdom, family and fashion together. During the years that Obamaserves as President of the United States, Michelle has accompanied him on visits across theUnited States and around the world. She has made a lot of wonderful speeches.This translation report selects Michelle’s four wonderful speeches arranged in time order：from Michelle’s first diplomatic speech, the speech made on April3,2009at Elizabeth GarrettAnderson School in Islington, London; the speech made on May22,2011at the United Stateshighest military academy West Point; the speech made on June17,2012at Oregon StateUniversity and the speech made on September4,2012at the Democratic National Convention inCharlotte, North Carolina. From these four examples, we can make a deeper understanding ofthe culture and the values of the United States. Meanwhile, I also explored the problems we mayface in the similar speech interpretation and the translation strategies we can use.In this thesis, I focus on the top two translation problems I met during my interpretation:the first is mistranslation and the second is missed translation. I also discuss the tone of myinterpretation so that the meaning can not only be conveyed faithfully but also gracefully. |
