Abstract/Summary:
This is a report on the translation of A Handbook for International Degree Program Students of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, compiled by the Institute for International Education of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) and published in2012. Guangdong, the forward position of reform and opening up, is attracting more and more people from around the world. And Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, as an internationally famous university, which is located in Guangzhou, Guangdong, is also attracting more and more students from all over the world. Undeniably, there are international students who achieve high scores in HSK and have a good command of Chinese. However, the author is sorry to say that only a small number of them are good at Chinese and most of them just come to improve Chinese in GDUFS. Thus, the international students who are already studying in GDUFS and who intend to study in GDUFS are in urgent need of an English version of A Handbook for International Degree Program Students of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. The source text is made up of several major parts, such as the regulations on management of international student status, regulations on dormitory management, annual review of scholarships, and procedures for obtaining pertinent documents, etc. Although some universities or colleges have their own English handbooks for international students, there lack relevant researches on the translation of a Chinese handbook. In this report, the author attempts to make a study of the structure transference of Chinese parataxis into English hypotaxis. The case study is mainly divided into three parts, namely, the lexical patterns, the syntactical patterns, and the discourse patterns. Specifically, this report deals with the use of participles, relatives, conjunctions, prepositions, adverbs, passive voice, various methods or any combination of the above-mentioned strategies. Through the writing of this report, the author is in the hope that it is somewhat valuable to the translation of handbooks for international students.
