The Academic Committee of the State Council set up a professional degree intranslation (Master of Translation and Interpreting, MTI for short) in2007. ByOctober2010, there had been altogether three batches of158universities ratifiedto recruit students in MTI programs. Along with the establishment of MTI degreein succession, more and more universities begin to cultivate applied translationtalents. As the talent training base for modern science and technology, universityof science and engineering (USE for short) plays an increasingly important role intranslation talents cultivation with its unique background of professionalknowledge. As there are few studies on the USE MTI programs in China, thestatus quo of translation talent training in USE is scarcely acquainted.According to the related theories on curriculum design as well as thepragmatism-oriented translation theory and the constructivism-oriented teachingtheory, the author tries to carry on investigation and analysis with the spectrum oftraining goal、student recruitment、curriculum design、classroom teaching、teachingstaff and internship base by means of online investigation to the talent trainingschemes of eight USE MTI programs and the online questionnaire to the MTIstudents from the eight universities. In combination with the qualitative and the quantitative analysis, the authorpreliminarily summarizes the status quo of translation talent training in USE:1) Most USEs do not have their own distinctive features, which can bereflected in their training objectives and curriculum designs.2) Most USEs fail to adopt incentive method to attract the students withscience and engineering background to join in their MTI programs.3) Teaching staff is competent-sufficient for these MTI programs. However, the objectivism teaching pattern, as the pattern for traditional teaching, isstill dominant in their classroom teaching.4) More internship opportunities are called for by the USE MTI students.Based on the status quo, advanced experiences home and abroad in translatortraining (such as designing specialized MTI programs for translator training, attaching importance to Computer Aided Translation, highlighting the importanceof internship base, reforming the teaching pattern as well as cultivatingprofessionalism among students) will be introduced for shedding some light on thedevelopment of USE MTI education in China.
