Analysis On The Language And Culture Of Jiujiang Place Names

Place names are provided for particular areas as the language symbols under thecertain social groups．The study of place names from the perspective of language andculture has become an important subject of linguistics research．As cultural carriers，place names also contain rich cultural connotations behind the fixed forms oflanguage.The roads，streets，all levels of villages，towns and countries，all kinds of naturaland historical geographic entities in Jiujiang city are the study objects of thispaper．On the basis of the existing researches about Jiujiang place names and Jiujiangdialect,this paper firstly analyzes the phonetic characteristics,vocabularycharacteristics and rhetoric devices to induce their unique language features．Therecomes to a conclusion：Jiujiang place names not only follows the general phoneticcharacteristics of the modern Chinese，but also has some special dialect phoneticfeatures of big opening degree and soft rhyme，the usage of quantifiers andreversible words is also a major feature of Jiujiang place names．Secondly，the paperclassifies and analyses Jiujiang place names to induce five naming reasons bycombining the theories of toponymy and cultural linguistics，using the researchmethods of statistical analysis．The final part is about further explaining the culturalconnotations behind Jiujiang place names，in order to make people understandJiujiang place names deeply.
