The source of this translation report derives from several short stories by Guy deMaupassant. In the process of translation, the translator adopts appropriate techniques ontranslation by analyzing the type of the text and its linguistic characteristics, and then givessummary to the translation process. The Colonel’s Ideas is based on Franco-Prussian War and uses the first-person point ofview to narrate. While the other one Miss Harriet also chooses the first person “I”, an oldpainter to describe the whole story. In the two stories, there are lots of long and complicatedsentences with flowery language and delicate words, which brings me a lot of difficulties. TheColonel’s Ideas is offered by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, and the task is apart of the “Bilingual Project” of Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, so thetranslation text should meet requirement of “Bilingual Project” as well as faithfully transmitthe original text’s meaning, and at the same time, attention should also be paid to the unifyingof technical terms. The translator mainly adopts Newmark’s translation theory, and tries to make a goodcombination of semantic translation and communicative translation in the translation. Thispaper mainly analyzes the problems met in the process, the solution, the translation theory andskill used in the process on the basis of the text, and gives specific examples to present thetranslation process. In the last part of the paper, the translator summarizes what she learned from thistranslation activity and find out her own deficiencies in this process.
