The Application Of Schema Theory In Interpretation For Conventions&Exhibitions

Based on schema theory, this thesis tries to study the function of schemata in comprehension, memorization and expression in interpretation for conventions&exhibitions by analyzing vivid materials. Then three strategies are proposed to improve interpreting quality:accumulating similar schemata, modifying discrepant schemata and reconstructing missing schemata. Accumulating similar schemata refers to the way that interpreters provide sub-schemata and meaning units for audience to complete their existing schemata. By providing background knowledge, audience’s related schemata can be stimulated and achieve better understanding. Modifying discrepant schemata aims to overcome comprehension difficulties caused by cultural differences. Due to cultural discrepancy, different individuals could bear distinct feelings towards one thing as their activated schemata are different. By explaining underlying meaning, interpreters can modify audience’s existing schemata to facilitate their comprehension. Re-constructing missing schemata deals with the situation that a unique concept in source-language culture is totally absent in target-language culture. In this situation, interpreters should convey both literal meaning and connotation to audience to help them understand the related information. Integrating schema theory and interpretation for conventions&exhibitions, this thesis tries to draw the attention of interpreters for conventions&exhibitions and encourage them to apply schema theory into practice.
