On Chengzhai’s Poetry Propositions And Poetry Writting

Yang Wanli is a famous poet of the Southern Song Dynasty whose poems are mainlyseen in the Poetry of Chengzhai.He has some propositions of the theory of poetry which is“the nature (Shixing)”,”the taste (Shiwei)” and “the change (Qiubian)”.Poetry in thesepropositions,“Chengzhai Style” gained its great success.This research combines the poetryand the propositions of Yang Wanli,in order to have a new understanding and grasp on YangWanli.The fullof the text is divided into three main parts:Part one:the relationship between “the nature (Shixing)”proposition and the poetrywriting of Yang Wanli.There will be some researches on the advancement and the connotationof “the nature (Shixing)”proposition,and through which we will have a review of the “nature”in Yang Wanli`s poetry.Before the age of Yang Wanli,there is a school of poetry writing whichis leading by Huang Tingjian that called the “School of Jiangxi”.They claim that poem withtheir own scholarship and to seek poetic Syntax in the ancients writings,which is also calledby themselves that “make iron into gold” and “change the flesh and bone”.It makes thewriting of the poetry more and more narrowly.In the early period of Yang Wanli,he learned thestyle of writing of the “School of Jiangxi”,but soon he found that the harder he learned by the“School of Jiangxi”,the narrower his poems were writing.For this reason,he advocates back tothe nature to find the source of poetry writing.And he claim that the poem should be all by thenature and never pretended.His unique poems which is called “Chengzhai Style”played apositive role in the changes of poetry in the middle period of the Southern Song Dynasty withits lively and natural,humor,novel of imagery.Part two:the relationship between “the taste (Shiwei)”proposition and the poetrywriting of Yang Wanli.This part mainly get a research on the advancement and theconnotation of “the taste (Shiwei)”proposition,and through which we will have a review ofthe “tasting” in Yang Wanli`s poetry.In the assess of poem by Yang Wanli,the “taste”is a veryimportant proposition.Yang Wanli get an attention to the taste of the poem in the late period ofthe Tang Dynasty which is based on the300poems in the The Book of Songs because of its“enough but not overly of the lust”and “enough but not overly of the complain”,all of whichare conforming with a view of the teaching of the poem that is gentle and tender.At the sametime,he claim that the poem is a tool of healing the society.He often shows an anxiety of thesociety by the form of poetry,he shows his indignation of the turpitude of the middle ofChina,the concern of the people in the occupied areas in his writing.But Yang Wanli`s poemsare not the same as the writing of Lu You,Yang Wanli do not express his emotion directly but by an euphemism way which adds a taste in his poems beyond the words.Part three:the relationship between “the change (Qiubian)”.proposition and the poetrywriting of Yang Wanli.According to the proposition of change in the poetry by Yang Wanlihimself,Yang Wanli`s change of poem writing can be divided into four periods.First is theperiod of imitation,before the year of1162(the32ed year of Shaoxing”),in this period YangWanli`s writing is mainly learning by the “School of Jiangxi”.Second is the period of periodof transition,from the year of1162(the32ndyear of Shaoxing”) to the year of1177(the4thyearof “Chunxi”),in this period,Yang Wanli learned the writing of the Five-character verses ofChen Shidao,the Seven-character quatrains of Wang Anshi,and the quatrains writing by theformer poet in the Tang Dynasty and innovative at the same time. It makes the “ChengzhaiStyle” well known by people by emerge.The third period is the period of formation,which isfrom the year of1177(the “Ding You”of “Chunxi”)to the year of1178(the “Wu Xu”of“Chunxi”).Yang Wanli ends his imitation and develops his own style which is written by himfreely.That means the “Chengzhai Style”is enjoying its mature.The forth period is a period ofdeveloping and changing,the period is later than the November of the year of1190(the1styearof “Shaoxi”).His writing content changes from the scene to express patriotic fervor.Yang Wanli`s claim of the poem advocates “the nature (Shixing)”,”the taste (Shiwei)”and “the change (Qiubian)”,all of which are paid great attention by people in Song Dynasty.Itmakes a big influence in the later periods.
