<Tannhauser>, including three episodes, is a romantic grand opera. Wagner use the Germanic folk tales and myths and legends shape one character:Tannhauser, who make Knight, Minnesinger, Pagan, Christian, as his own character, at same time struggle between secular and pure love.Wagner use different music expression techniques to make, Tannhauser, this character, well-developed, Tune’s ups and downs and harmony’s beautify embody the determined and courageous knight image, semitone’s applications and tonality’s frequency conversion portray the image of lonely and painful minnesinger. The image of Pagan, secular love is embodied by a good deal of semitone. The nature of love is embodied by charming diatonic scale. In Christian’s music, the author’s writing techniques always very traditional, regular structure and stable melody.Tannhauser has some complicated character, in some way, he is also the adolescent Wagner, and the contradiction in his character is common problem for intellectuals in nineteenth Century.
