A Research On Repetition In Doctor-patient Conversation

The doctor-patient relationship is becoming a hot topic currently,whereas it isunarguable that the relation has been increasingly getting tense.In this case,as well asthe institution,failing to make effective communications between doctors and patientscan be regarded as a significant cause.In order to enhance the doctor-patientcommunication, there are illustrations in the thesis applied to explore how to expressappropriately,which is referred to the recurrence phenomena between doctors andpatients,aiming to make some beneficial demonstrations to build a harmony new-typerelationship in society.The recurrence phenomena in doctor-patient conversations are classifiedaccording to three criteria,such as expressions,subjects, and functions in thisthesis.After analysis,the phenomena are characterized as follows.First of all,the reiteration in the doctor-patient conversation could be ofwords,phrases,or sentences.Semantics repetition can be also totally and partly,whichis largely depended on the speakers’judgement from whether the listenersunderstanding their speeches or not.Secondly,from the view of the subject,the phenomena of self-repetition indoctor-patient conversation are practically caused by listeners’not understanding orcatching the speakers.However,the doctor-patient mutual reiterations are of differentpurpose.The doctors’repetition of patients is intended to confirm the patients’speechesagain,changing topics,and promote the conversation,while the patients’ showsacknowledgment or an euphemistic query.Thirdly,in terms of the function,there are two phenomena,including Reiteration ofmonitoring and discourse function in doctor-patient conversation. Reiteration ofmonitoring in speaking as caused by the monitoring program works effectively.Prospective reiteration to some extent can be considered as a strategy of speaking andcan be used in case of emergency to obtain more time for linguistic organization. Thereiteration of repairing can help doctor-patient express more exactly and promote thecommunication. The reiteration of discourse function is applied as a method of textualcohesion,which is extremely effective on both context construction and conversationalcomprehension.Generally speaking,in order to reveal the underlying cause of the recurrencephenomenon in doctor-patient conversation,psychological linguistics,for example,pragmatics,and cognitive linguistics are applied in this thesis,making the twoparties understand the proper and reasonable appeals from each other,which removemaximally the contradiction for not communicating well,whereas build a harmoniousand friendly new-type doctor-patient relationship.
