The facial expression not only shows individual’s emotional tendency of externalstimulation, but also contains its personality characteristics, such as temperament, personality, behavior and so on. Recognizing facial expressions of others from facialcues accurately, which reflects the level of individual EQ and affects the individual’ssocial adaptation. As an important variable, field dependence-independence cognitivestyle influences individual’s cognitive activities. The difference between the two kindsof cognitive style is mainly reflected in the different dependence on "field". Previousstudies discussed the condition between two groups in facial expression recognition, but the research on facial expression relative recognition is blank yet. Whethercognitive style affects facial expression recognition in different background andcomplicated situation? If the effect exists, how it affects the facial expressionrecognition? In this study,48field dependence-independence cognitive style individuals wereselected by GEFT, and the experimental materials were chosen from JACFEE andIAPS, including, respectively, happy&sad facial expression images and neutrallandscape pictures. Aimed to explore the field dependence-independence individualscarried out facial expression relative recognition in different background conditionswith eye movement method. Mainly investigated the subjects’ correct rate, reactiontime and intensity scores in different background conditions, meanwhile recorded andanalyzed the fixation track, fixation time, fixation counts within the areas of interest. The major findings in this study are follows:1. Field dependence-independence cognitive style individuals appeared on the"ceiling effect" in the happy and sad expressions’ overall correct rate; there is nosignificant difference between the two.2. There were significant differences in reaction time between the happy and sadexpressions; the reaction time of happy was much shorter than sad. And the fielddependence individuals’ reaction time was significantly longer than the fieldindependence individuals’.3. The intensity scores of field dependence individuals were significantly higherthan the field independence individuals’ in the same background condition. And the field independence individuals had a higher intensity scores in the background oflandscape pictures and different facial expressions.4. There were significant differences in fixation counts and time within the areasof interest between different cognitive styles’ individuals. The field dependenceindividuals’ fixations were more than the field independence individuals’. And thefield dependence individuals had more fixations on background conditions in thebackground of different facial expressions.5. There were significant differences in fixation track between different cognitivestyles’ individuals in different background conditions; the field dependenceindividuals had more fixations on both kinds of facial expressions. And inverted “△”was found in recognition of sad emotion.
