With the changes of the times and the progress of science and technology, air traffic rose and developed rapidly in the20th Century, and it has a monopoly on the long distance tourism. The aircraft, as the carrier of a modern and advanced means of transportation, has been more and more accepted by the public. In the past, only high-income consumer groups can afford the plane, but with the improvement of people’s living standard, now the ordinary working classes are also prone to travel by air. In addition, travelling by air itself has the advantages of high speed and time saving, which makes it more attractive.Since more and more people choose to travel by air, it becomes particularly important to ensure the safety of the flight. It requires the multi-parties engaged to tacitly cooperate for the goal. Strengthening the ground-air talk is one of the most important items, into which the practitioners should make an effort. If the ground-air sides can use radiotelephony English to communicate accurately and fluently, that is to say the air-traffic controllers can send command clearly and intelligibly and the pilots can feedback briefly, so most of the traffic accidents can be avoided, thus greatly improving the safety of the aircraft during the flight at high altitudes. This thesis combines the adaptation theory and the cooperative principle together to give radiotelephony English a pragmatic analysis. Through consulting courses about radiotelephony English and the practical examples of the ground-air talk, the author mainly analyzes the application of the adaptation theory and the cooperative principle in radiotelephony communication of the international flights. This article points out that the ground-air sides shall follow these two theories in the actual work in order to reduce the miscommunication due to incorrect use of standard phraseologies. There are six parts in this thesis.Chapter one analyzes the motivation, significance, and objective of the thesis.Chapter two is the literature review about radiotelephony English, including the brief introduction of radiotelephony English, in which the author gives a brief definition and features of radiotelephony English and mainly discusses its domestic and foreign research.Chapter three presents the theoretical framework which guides the whole thesis. The contents include Verschueren’s adaptation theory and Grice’s cooperative principle. This part mainly discusses the background and significance of the adaptation theory and the cooperative principle.Chapter four and chapter five are the key parts of the thesis. Chapter four analyzes radiotelephony communication from the perspective of the adaptation theory from four angles of contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptation processes. This chapter aims to find the reasons of miscommunication between the ground-air sides from a comprehensive and profound level. Chapter five uses the cooperative principle to analyze radiotelephony communication from the maxims of quantity, quality, manner and relation for the purpose of reducing the mistakes in the communication.Chapter six is the conclusion. In this part, the author gives a brief summary of the achievements obtained after the research and also mentions that there are still shortcomings and deficiencies in the thesis, which may become the point of penetration for other researchers to do their further research. At the same time, the author puts forward some suggestions in order to achieve a real breakthrough in the field.
