As an infant professional degree program, Master of Translation and Interpreting,or MTI, is quickly gaining steam. Along with its development also come more andmore obvious problems, which have attracted many experts’ attention. They start tofocus on things concerning MTI teaching models and methods, curriculum andtextbooks. The newness of this program, coupled with the students’ attitudes to theiridentity and responses to the teaching models, may cause changes to their mentality.According to studies, different levels of anxiety can bring negative effects tolearners. MTI students do suffer anxiety, despite different levels. The author thenceconducts research from this angle and finds out that the surveyed students haveanxiety at seven stages during their two-year study and the level varies withindividual personality, mentality and environmental factors.The author conducts a survey involving all MTI students from Ocean Universityof China, University of Qingdao and Qingdao University of Science and Technologywith the methods of quantitative and qualitative analysis. Quantitative analysis, basedon questionnaires, is mainly related to personal backgrounds and responses of thestudents under survey. The qualitative analysis is made in the form of interviews tofurther verify the results of the quantitative research.This thesis falls into five chapters. The first chapter briefly states the objective,meaning, framework and research background of the paper. The second introduces thecurrent situation of MTI education and factors influencing MTI students’ anxiety fromthe aspects of personality, mentality and environment. This chapter then explains thesources of their anxiety during two-year study and proposes solutions from therespects of teachers, students, school, social demands and education model itself. Thelast chapter sums up the research findings, points out the limitations and makes suggestions for deeper research.The author points out that MTI candidates experience anxiety at the seven stagesand the anxiety source varies. The existence of anxiety has affected the improvementof MTI candidates’ translation ability and the future jobs. Therefore, the reason andthe severity of their anxiety should be highly valued.
