The couple of adverbs, such as ‘Yu(又)’,’Hai(还)’,’Fu(复)’,’Geng(更)’,’Zai(再)’, have a semantic development fromrepetion to mood. It’s a representative mode of semantic developments ofadverbs in Chinese. This paper stated the case studies of the couple ofrepetitionary adverbs and summarized the mode of semantic developmentby means of historical comparative method and semantic analysis. Thispaper includes four parts:The first part introduced the definition of the study objects. Themeaning of ‘repetion’ here is in general sense. It includes the repetion innarrow sense, which means the same thing occurred repeatedly, and theadditional account. There are two kinds of modal meanings from repetion:enhancing the function mood and expressing the subjective mood. Wecan find out regularities from the semantic evolution model of repetionand mood. The second part studied the grammaticalization of the couplefrom repetion to mood from the points of semantic relations and syntacticconditions, especially the grammaticalization course between the repetion and the mood. The whole chapter is arranged by the typicality of thesemantic revolution of the cases. The first is ‘You’(又) which is theearliest to have completed the semantic evolution between repetion andmood. And then it’s ‘Hai’(还) and ‘Fu’(复), which developed from themeaning of ‘coming back’. The third is one ‘Geng’(更), which developedfrom the meaning of changing. The last one is ‘Zai’(再), which used towork as a verbal measure word. Because of the different semantic sources, the semantic evolution routes of the cases are not all the same. Based onthe second part, the third part summarized the basic modes of semanticdevelopment and the related mechanism. The modal meanings ofenhancing the function mood and expressing the subjective mood havetheir own semantic evolution mechanisms. The basic modes are asfollowed: repetion-lasting-enhancing rhetorical mood,additional-connection-enhancing rhetorical mood, repetion-inverseadditional-transition tone, repetion-degree-praise tone,additional-degree-dissatisfied tone and repetion-condemnation tone. Thefactors influencing the semantic development include the semanticpresence of source words, degree order, semantic presupposition and thereplace of the members in the relationship of semantic paradigmaticrelation. The last part of this paper gave a conclusion and limitation.
