| This thesis is a report on the Chinese translation of The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, abiography by Edmund Morrison which won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in1980. Thereason why I chose this edition as the translating material lies in my appreciation for thestriking details the author depicts and the great qualities of Theodore to become the26thpresident of the United States, which can be seen here and there between the lines. The firstthree chapters have been translated into Chinese, of which I took the third chapter as the basisof my translation report. This report is to present the main difficulties in the translatingprocess and the corresponding solutions I finally adopted.The first part is divided into three phases according to the chronological order: thepre-translating preparation, translating principle, and some key points in the final transcript inthe target language, which record the problems I came across during each period and mydealing strategies. Typical examples are selected for further analysis in the second part fromfive perspectives, which are also five translating methods: translation of special words;conversion of the voice in translation; amplification; translating in the normal or invertedorder; the method of dealing with the relative clauses.From the translating practice, I gain a deeper understanding of translation:1) thesignificance of pre-translating preparation. Without full preparation before the task is carriedout, it is possible for the translator to do a very inefficient work;2) the influence of therequirements in the translation. Owing to specific requirements, the translator has tounderstand the text fully and translate according to the original material instead of totallyreproducing a new text;3) the role of the translator in biography translation. The translator has to make great efforts to translate a good biography well. Also, I have gained a furtherknowledge of translatability and untranslatability of translation. |
