Notwithstanding the fact that the contents of the public art, whose occurrence can be traced back to the birth of the decoration or sculpture, were brought up long before the occurrence of the concept of "public art", the construction and arrangement of the public art still require extra attention in building universities’new campuses. It is noteworthy that even though in new campuses of universities located in highly developed cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, public art does not draw much attention and could even be regarded as sacrificable. Upon such background, the dissertation argues that public art plays a vital role in planning the structure of new campuses in that it bears the culture of the university in question and it is also a symbol thereof. Moreover, it can reflect the history and represent the future of such a university. Beijing, as the centre of politics, culture, education and international communication, has over100universities and less than one third of them has new campuses. However, some of the universities with new campuses are influential all over the country or even the whole world. The dissertation carries out a research on public art in new campuses of universities located in Beijing and upon the planned research to8representative universities with newly built campuses, angling to enhance the development and construction of public art in universities, it puts forward a plethora of suggestions which might be useful to the further development of public art in new campuses.
