Henan, a Central Plains of Chinese hinterland, attracts tourists from all over the world because ofits unique geographical location and strong historical atmosphere. Henan’s tourism industry in last decadehas reached an unprecedented boom, increasing the number of foreign tourists. The importance of thetranslation of the scenic spots has also been gradually highlighted. From the perspective of schema theory,this article analyzes the readability of English versions on Chinese introduction at scenic spots in Henanprovince. First of all, it reviews the development of schema theory, explains its definition, source,characteristics and classification, and then chooses five typical scenic spots in Henan province to analyzefrom the aspect of schema theory in language schema, form schema and content schema to discuss thereadability of the English translation. It uses the method of Schema theory combined with the spotstranslation to analyze the schema theory’s influence on understanding and expressing language information,pointing out that in the process of tourism material translation, the translator may use literal translation,transliteration, meaning, cuts, or other appropriate translation skills according to the above three types ofschemata to achieve the purpose of transferring and communicating tourism information. And from the useof these schema the paper summarizes the general schema of English translation in Henan scenic spots.Schema make the people’s cognition influenced by previous experience. When people contact orlearn new things, it depends on the already existing schemata in their minds. Schema will always make thenew things related to the known things, and have them related together. It can inspire new schema to knowor help to know something new and rely on these.schemata to explain, predict and organize the information of the outside world. At the same time,it guides people to compare, predict, identify and recognize the old and the new information, using theobtained new experience to form a new schema under the new context. From analysis of collectedscenic spots translation we can draw the following conclusions: firstly, the tourists build language schemain their minds through the schema activation to the scenic spots translation, including some of thevocabulary and idioms. The special meaning of words inspire the visitors to associative memory about the scenic spots and form the new schema in their mind; secondly, the translators applicate the parallel offormal schema in translation to add more aesthetic feeling to the scenic spots and increase the readabilityand construct some related beauty schema to tourists, so as to achieve the purpose of propaganda of thescenic spots; thirdly, the culture and natural scenery contained in the content schema inspire the people’sbasic schema of scenic spots in Henan. It also formed the unique scenic spots description schema.Finally, schema theory guides the process of translation in English translation of scenic spots inHenan province. And it has become the dominant schema of scenic spot translation which has strongpracticability with scenic spots. It also provides a new schema of view and method which has an importantguiding significance for English translation in the scenic spot. However, we also found through researchthat there still exists some wrong theory in the scenic spot translation which leads to the misreading of theprimitive translation and generates the deviation of understanding.
