Buzzwords, a kind of lexical phenomenon, reflect the events and problems that peopleare concerned with in a country or region in a particular period. With different buzzwordsin different periods, buzzwords are the sensitive nerve in the society to reflect socialchanges. Since reform and opening-up, great changes have mushroomed in the societysuch as the unprecedented changes in politics, economy, science, culture and education. Asthe mirror of the politics, economy, culture and people’s livelihood, buzzwords are theminiature of Chinese society. Chinese international influence has become stronger, andmore and more foreigners desire to have an understanding to China. As the reflection of thesituation of contemporary China, buzzwords’ translation is inevitably involved whenChinese culture is introduced to foreigners. Therefore, it has an important significance tomake a research on the translation of buzzwords.As buzzwords are anti-traditional and non-standard, its translation can be classifiedinto the pragmatic translation. The strategic orientation of translation in the pragmatic textsis domestication, that is to say, reader-centered. Based on functionalist approaches andbuzzwords released by National Language Resource Monitoring and Research Center, theofficial website of China Daily and the blog of the official website of Shanghai Daily, itstudies C-E buzzwords’ translation in this paper.In this paper, it discusses the definitions, classifications of buzzwords. Besides, onthe basis of the previous studies of C-E buzzwords’ translation, it discusses thetranslatability of buzzwords. In the main body of this paper, the author draws a cleardistinction to the difference in the thought pattern and cultural images between Chineseand western. Then the author makes an analysis of the related factors needing to beconsidered in the C-E buzzwords’ translation in the light of functionalist approaches. Onthe basis of the analysis, the writer proposes three principles guiding the C-E buzzwords’translation. At last, the author puts forward the related translation strategies which areinformation explicitation and complement, source language’s introduction and target language’s adoption and the corresponding translation methods. The purpose of the thesisis to improve the quality of the translation version, to promote the cultural communicationbetween China and foreign countries and to supply a new angle for other researchers tostudy the C-E buzzwords’ translation.
