The study for metaphor translation arouses more and more attention among thescholars in the translation circles for recent years. This thesis aims to explore the metaphortranslation in the conference speeches of China-ASEAN Expo from the perspective ofVerschueren’s Adaptation Theory and provides some enlightenments for the metaphortranslation in the conference speeches.According to Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory, the properties of language includesvariability, negotiability and adaptability and the four angles of investigation mainlycontains the contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptability. The use of language is a continuousprocess of making choice in the linguistic and communicative context.Based on Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory, this thesis attempts to answer thefollowing questions:1) What kind of factors are closely related to the metaphors in theconference speeches?2) How does the translator make adaptation when translatingmetaphors from the perspective of Adaptation Theory?3) What are the translationstrategies that can be employed in the metaphor translation of conference speeches?This thesis employs the qualitative analysis to study the metaphor translation fromthree different aspects. Firstly, it is found that the metaphorical expressions in theconference speeches of China-ASEAN Expo are closely linked with their culture, historyand geographical environment. Secondly, during the process of translation, the translatormakes adaptation to the lexical level, the mental world, the social world and the physicalworld to effect successful communication. Finally, the author attempts to offer fourdifferent metaphor translation strategies, namely, literal translation, free translation,conversion and deletion. These strategies can help the metaphor translation better adapt tothe linguistic and communicative context and achieve successful communication effect.
