United States of America and Japan are the two superpowers of animation in the world. They have excellent cartoons that people like to watch. They have a wealth of experience thatpeople to learn from. The design method of supporting role is a very important part inAmerican and Japanese animation. But the design patterns of supporting role in China, not asgood as the others. The purpose of this paper is to research the different of the design patternsof supporting role in animation (SRA) between American and Japanese. Comprehend theoutstanding ideas of design. Find the shortcomings of the design method of SRA in Chineseanimations. Finally, I put forward the idea of design of SRA.First, I introduced the development of animation from a technical point and an artistic point. Idefined the concept of SRA. SRA can shape the leading role and SRA plays an important rolein the story. Second, I summarized and analyzed the differences of SRA`s design patternsbetween American and Japanese in character design, shape structure design, color design, movement design and voice design. Third, I analyzed the reasons of the difference of SRA`sdesign patterns between American and Japanese in animation and business model and in thenational character of culture. At last, I analyzed the weaknesses of Chinese SRA. Thecharacter’s personality is relatively simple and lack of complex psychological changes. Shapestructure of SRA lack of symbolistic, temporal spirit and nationality. Details of thecharacterization are not rich. The colors of SRA lack of nationalization features and colorideographic function. The movement design of SRA is simple, more modeling movement, lack of characterization movement and details. Voice actor lack of performances during theprocess of dubbing the SRA. They did not use emotions to shape the roles. Sound and mouthare not downy counterpoint and lack of realistic. I put forward some ideas about designmethod of SRA. According to the needs of the different age’s audience to adjust the designmethod of SRA, more particular shape structure, more nationalized in color design, moreabundant details in movement design and more emotional dubbing in SRA.
