The description of master-servant relationship in Goethe’s ‘Faust is differentfrom that of the previous literature works. In this great work, the writer describesthree couples of master and servant: the God and Mephisto, the counter of gamblingties them together; the God and Faust, their relationship is based on their same faith inGod; Faust and Mephisto, they become master and servant because of the contract.The master-servant relationship is the result of hierarchical society presentingdifferent characteristics in the symbiotic society, with good and evil spirit and humanliving together. The God is the creator of the universe and dominates the world, thelord of all whom human and evil must submit to. The devils rebelled against God andfell to hell, with the rebellious spirit then reached a mutual agreement with Godwithin some restrictions. Faust is the creature of God, but he has been endowed withsubjective initiative. While piously worshipping the God, he explored his own value.There is a relatively balanced binding relationship with conflicts between therebellious Mephisto and Faust, the masterpiece of God. The tripartite of human, Godand demon was connected by a contract or a stake. The master and the servant agreedto clear about the responsibility. The master-servant relationship, different from thehierarchy restrictions, reflects the specific cultural value, which was embodied in howthey realized their own values between the master-servant conflicts, how theydisplayed the freedom under the restriction of ‘contract’, how the morals guided themwithin religious concepts, in details this relationship shows on the activitiesimplemented to confirm their own identity under the restrictions. The cultural value ofthe coexistence of master and servant was reflected in the realization process of theseries values. The deep aesthetic value was embodied in dialectical unificationrelations between the master and the servant’s characteristics, realizing the restrict andbalance of the relationship.
