This translation report is based on the translation of The Myth of America, the fifth chapter of The Puritan Origins of the American Self, written by Sacvan Bercovitch in1975. The language styles of this article are profession in vocabulary, complicated in sentence, so in the process of translation, the translator must use the skills flexibly. This report, in the example of this article aims to sum up the translation methods and skills used in the phrase and sentence translations respectively. They are annotation, amplification, cutting and converting. Meanwhile the translator also presents some difficulties faced in the translation process and its solving strategies.This translation report consists of four parts. Chapter one introduces the background of the text, the author and his major works, translation purpose and significance. Chapter two discusses the translation methods and skills with examples. Chapter three is about the difficulties that faced in the translation. Chapter four is the conclusion part. It sums up the gains of the translator.
