This thesis makes a cognitive investigation of Mongolian N+N compounds on the basis of the figure/ground segregation, conceptual metaphor and metonymy. The thesis proposes the following viewpoints based on a quantitative investigation of253MNNCs in Mongolian Grammar Information Dictionary of Fixed Phrases and Study of Mongolian Word Formation.(1) The common meaning possessed by two components is figure in the synonymous paratactic compound; in opposite paratactic compound, the new combined meaning is figure.(2) In subordinate compounds, one base is clearly subordinate to another. The second noun in the compound is the head concept.(3) The blended combination gains a figurative sense in a particular context, and what people really attend to is the figurative meaning. Therefore, the figurative meaning is figure and literal meaning which is helpful for perceiving the figurative meaning is ground.(4) In general overlapping compounds, figurative meaning is taken as the figure. In imitation reiterative compounds, the first element is taken as the figure which corresponds to the semantic focus of the combination.N+N compounds are productive in Mongolian language. Therefore, it is important for understanding of and communication in Mongolian to do a comprehensive cognitive analysis of the Mongolian N+N compounds.
