Abstract/Summary:
In the multicultural age, there exist cultural dilTcrences, even cultural gaps amongihc people from different nations and countries’. Cultivating peoples sensitivity tocultural differences, narrowing cultural gaps, and developing people’s InterculturalCommunicative Competence (ICC) have bccome the urgent need in the new era. Thisresearch holds that teachers should lay emphasis on the cultivation of students’ ICC incollege English teaching. Up to now,there have been quite a few researches oncultivating college students" ICC, but the research on cultivating tourism majors’ ICChas been rare.This thesis takes Shanghai Institute of Tourism (SIT) as an example, andex’pounds on how to cultivate tourism majors ICC in college English teaching. First,it discusses the signiifcance of the possession of ICC and the importance of cultureteaching. Then the literature review lays the theoretical basis for this research,and theauthor sums up the following concepts: the deifnitions,classifications andcharacteristics of culture; the definitions, elements and characteristics ofcommunication; the definitions of ICC; the relationship between language and culture:the content, principles, methods and goals of eulture teaching.The author makes the empirical study by combining the qualitative method andquantitative method, including the ICC test, classroom observation, and the interview.This research discovers the inadequacy of tourism majors’ ICC, and explores reasonsfor this phenomenon. The author focuses on the time, content and methods of cultureteaching as well as the student’s response to the culture teaching in English lessons,and then analyzes the results of classroom observation. The result of interviewingEnglish teachers further proves the conclusion drawn from the classroom observation:on the other hand, the inlcn iew reveals the deeper causes which hinder the cultivationof students*ICC.Based on the ifndings of theoretical research and empirical research, the authoroffers the following suggestions for cultivating tourism majors’ ICC: setting thesuitable and concrete aims for culture teaching: clarifying the principles and content of culture teaching; putting forward the following strategies for culture teaching:(1)strengthening tourism major’s motivation for culture learning;(2)integratingmultimedia into culture t’eaching;(3)improving tourism majors oral English;(4)layingemphasis on both the target culture and tourism majors’ native culture;(5)presentingthree activities for culture teachingculture appreciation, culturecooperation, and on-site imitation of tour guides.
