In our daily life, people always plagued by the choice that "say truthful words" or "say beautiful words". Beautiful words make us feel comfortable but may be cheating. Truth is accurate but sometimes unfavorable. Researchers have explained that phenomena in self-enhancement theory and self-verification theory. Research has demonstrated that people might experience a need for both self-enhancement and self-verification, but these needs vary under different conditions. The existing researches have concluded a lot of conditions that influence the self-motive motivated, such as the meaning (important or unimportant) of feedback targets for persons, the position in one’s self-scheme, if threat one’s sense of self-worth. This paper has concluded a lot of studies about such field. And investigated that the effect of feedback target’s quality on feedback reaction. In our two studies, an important character and global and specific character were investigated. We expected that people always like favorable feedback about their important or global characters, but thought accuracy feedback about specific characters is more reliable, even the feedback is unfavorable.Study1:We investigate the effect of important character on feedback reaction. We conducted the Rosenberg (1965) SES in college students, then select top27%as high self-esteem group and bottom27%as low self-esteem group. Then invite these students to our laboratory. They will finish a very challenging intelligence scale. After five minutes the experimenter give them fake feedback, then told then read the feedback carefully and finished the following items.Study2:We investigate the effect of global character and specific character on feedback reaction. We select participants as study1. But when recruit participants we never told the truth, just tell we will take an activation about "leaderless group discussion".When arrived our meeting room, they finished an scale to measure their sociability, then discuss the problem which we prepare it in advance with other participants. After finish the discussion they would finish the feedback reaction scale to measure their affect reaction and cognitive reaction.We have concluded that (a)After accept the feedback about important character, positive feedback on test achievement, when compared to negative feedback, was followed by more pronounced affective states and more preference of the scale, especially for high self-esteem participants. There no significant difference between self-enhance effects and self-verification effects for low self-esteem participants after intelligence feedback. The self-enhancement effects were greater than self-verification effects after sociability feedback, regardless the self-esteem and the nature of feedback reactions.(b)When participants accept feedback on sociability scale, their self-enhancement strivings were completely overridden by their desire for self-verification. When participants accept feed on communication competence, positive feedback was followed by more pronounced affective states and more preference of the evaluation method, but their self-verification strivings were completely overridden by their desire for self-enhancement for the cognitive reaction.(c)The forgoing feedback about global character will influence the feedback reaction of specific character. For instance, the same negative feedback of specific character was followed by better evaluation of the feed resource if the forgoing feedback of global character was positive. But given the limitations of this study, the result remains to be further validation.This research has great theoretical and practical importance. From the theoretical perspective, features of the feedback quality are utilized to investigate the feedback-affecting factors. And these features are well defined based on their importance and evaluated from the global and specific perspectives, which greatly promotes the integration of the findings from existing research into this research. Based on existing research results, global adoration and specific accuracy was found in high satisfaction marital relationships. From the findings of this research, the above trend can be observed in more general situations.From the practical perspective, the newly acquired findings can be utilized for a series of applications, like the human resource management in a given organization or the mental health guidance. For example, feedback on the employee performance evaluation can be got from more specific and detailed perspectives, other than just from the overall results of the final evaluation.
