This article has employed the discovery method developed by Thornbury S.(2003) inHow to Teach Grammar into teaching plan of Time duration as the complement inorder to find out whether discovery method is practical and effective in the actualteaching. The article mainly introduces the discovery method‘s development and itsapplication on the Chinese teaching, learning strategies and textbook resources, through which to analyze this method‘s specific characteristics and the advantages.Besides, the author has developed the discovery pedagogy teaching steps on thefoundation of3P pedagogy: Presentation (teacher inputs, presents, students discover, teacher feedbacks), Practice (silent exercise, interacting task) and Test by summing upthe teaching cases of predecessors and referring to the teaching processes in textbookDiscover China. This article is also based on these teaching steps to conduct theteaching plan by using time duration as a complement as an example inpre-intermediate level, and also conduct an on-going investigation in order to receivethe feedbacks from students. The results show that the students already use discoverypedagogy for the self-study, which contributes the easiness of acceptance of thisbreakthrough pedagogy. By analyzing the unit-quiz‘s performance of the studentstaught with discovery pedagogy, the degrees of the cognitive difficulty on the fourduration complement patterns are identical with author‘s assumptions and theirunit-quiz performance (from easiest to most difficult:SVPersonD, S(time-pass)VOD,SVOVD, SVDO). But the most difficult pattern presents the highest average scores inthe mid-exam after8weeks, which means the discovery pedagogy could benefit thelearners‘long-term memory but also probably cause generalization. According toThornbury S.(2003)‘s evaluation standards E-factor and A-factor, the articleconcludes that the discovery pedagogy could stimulate students to intake the languagerules and improve the memory ability, also be widely applied into the actual teachingwith its superior efficiency and effectiveness.
