Now, we are in an information era. Thanks to the Internet, we can get moreand more information about the outside world. On the other hand, it is an era ofinformation explosion, and there is too much information for us to assimilate.Under such condition, even the most skillful translators can not adapt to thesituation. For example, the European Commission needs80interpreters perlanguage every day to help people communicate. Nowadays in China, there aremore than one million people serving in translation markets. Still they can notfully satisfy the marketing need. As a result, people will resort to the help ofmachine translation to improve the translation speed and quality. However, atpresent, the machine translation can not do the translation work efficiently andaccurately as human translators, especially when translating texts. On the contrary, sometimes, the MT may bring confusion to people. So it is urgent to find a botheffective and efficient way of translating. In this thesis, the author introduced the history of MT development both inthe world and our country and the approaches adopted in the MT systems. Usingthe MT system of Google Translate, the author compared the translation versions, from English to Chinese, translated respectively by human translators and GoogleTranslate, to find the limitation of MT, give some suggestions for theimprovement of MT, and try to find an effective and efficient way to gethigh-quality translation.
