The Reconstruction Of "Home" In The English Translation Of Hongloumeng

Cultural translation is a process of cultural transmission among different cultures.Understanding of the cultural phenomenon by the translator is therefore of the utmostimportance in that any misunderstanding on the part of the translator will result in failure ofcultural transmission. This dissertation takes cultural geography as the theoretical foundationand Hongloumeng by Cao Xueqin (with Gao E), A Dream of Red Mansions byYang Hsien-yi(together with Gladys Yang) and The Story of the Stone by David Hawkes (with JohnMinford) as the corpus to study the reconstruction of the concept of home in the Englishtranslation of Hongloumeng. And it concludes that the perspective of cultural geography isessential for the correct transmission of the cultural connotation of home. This dissertationmarks a new approach in the study of Hongloumeng and its English translation, as well as anew development in the field of interdisciplinary translation study.This dissertation, based on the definition of home by cultural geography, summarizes theconcept of home into three aspects: concrete space of home, gender space of home andpersonality space of home. This research finds that home is not only a static container, butalso a space full of hierarchal, gender and other cultural meanings and an approachcontributing to the shaping of personality. However, due to the lack of cultural consciousnessby the two translators, there exist mistranslations and even omission of cultural phenomena inthe English translation of Hongloumeng.
