The Cultural Choice Of Translation

This thesis conducts a cultural study about the Zhang Guruo’s version of Tess of The D’Urbervilles written by the19th century British writer Thomas Hardy from the perspective of Media-translatology. On the basis of social culture, the thesis probes into the impact of cultural context upon literature translation at the time.The body of the thesis is divided into four parts.Chapter one presents the media-translatology theory and research methods which paves the way to the sequent analysis.Chapter two briefly describes Hardy’s achievements in literature, attaches the importance to collecting enough materials for research.Chapter there analysis the particular characteristics of Tess translated by Zhang Guruo by comparing others versions, such as the cultural identities of language characteristics and numerous detailed annotations, the roles of translator’s in the translation process.Through the above analysis, the conclusion part emphasizes the essential points of thesis, including the cultural transmission and cultural consciousness change in the literature translation process as well as the translator’s subjectivities, tries to value them and foresees the brilliant future of media-translatology.
