Books are the major tools for passing civilization for human beings. In the Chinesehistory of5000years, books are of great significance to the inheritance of humancivilization. Therefore, the art of book binding design was born together with theappearance of books in the ancient time, which has played a very important role in theheritage and preservation of civilization. It is because of the existence of the art of bookbinding design, which is rich in the wisdom of our ancestors, that the Chinese civilization,which lasts for five thousand years, can be carried forward along with the history.In the twentieth century, the invasion of Western civilization and the development ofhigh technology produced great impact on book binding design. And particularly in recentyears, at the change of the century, the wide use of network and electronic books hasinfluenced greatly the reading habit of readers, which results in a great challenge to theexistence of the traditional paper books.Because of this, book binding design has become an indispensable part of a book,including book marketing. Therefore, the relationship between the psychology ofconsumers and book binding design turns to be a prominent issue. In order to expand themarket of paper books, it is necessary for the academic circles to research into therelations between book binding design and consumption psychology of readers.This paper, based on the analysis of the form and style of book binding design fromthe ancient time to the modern world, by using different methods of case study,investigation, comparison and contrast, makes researches into the relationship between theform and style of book binding design and the consumption psychology of readers in thehope of building a bridge of communication between the author, the editor and the readers,and finding a way for the survival of paper books.
