Objective: To clarify the mechanism of anti-pulmonary fibrosis activity of Huqiyin viaevaluation of the effects of the prescription, and its compositions onproliferation and apoptosis of human embryonic lung fibroblasts; and also tryto provide an academic basis on the clinical usage of the prescription. Methods: Human embryonic lung fibroblasts were used for the experiments. Routinecultured human embryonic lung flbroblasts of logarithmic period of growthwere divided into three groups: the control group, the positive control group(Dexamethasone), and the drug treated group (Huqiyin and its compositions). All of the samples were dissolved in culture medium (Dulbecco’s modifiedEagle’s medium, DEME) and the cells were treated with corresponding drugsexcept for those in the control group. Methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) cellproliferation assay was applied for the evaluation of the cytotoxic effects. Theapoptosis of the cells was observed via the inverted fluorescence microscopeand flow cytometer. Results: 1. The results demonstrated that low dose of Huqiyin and pericarpium citrireticulatae inhibited the proliferation of human embryonic lung fibroblastscultured for 24 hours. However, high-dose of the tested drugs showed acontrary effect, which enhanced the cell proliferation.2. All the groups showed no effects on inducement of the apoptosis of humanembryonic lung fibroblasts. Conclusion: Huqiyin inhibited the proliferation of human embryonic lung fibroblasts, however, it did not induce any apoptosis directly.
