Objective To analyze the epidemiology and etiology of hand-foot-mouth disease(HFMD) in Anhui from2008to2012and provide scientific evidence for formulatingeffective prevention and control strategies. Methods The data collected from the National Disease Surveillance InformationManagement System and the Surveillance Program of HFMD, descriptiveepidemiological method was utilized. Nucleic acid of enterovirus (EV) genome wasdetected by Real-time PCR.Results A total of360873HFMD cases were reported in Anhui from2008to2012,the average incidence rate of HFMD was1195.3per million. A total of1878severecases and79death cases were reported, the ratio of severe cases was0.52%and theratio of case fatality was218.9per million. The peak incidence occurred from April toJuly. There were significant differences among the incidence in different districts, theincidence of hand-foot-and-mouth in the northern Huaihe was higher than in thesouthern Yangtze River and Jianghuai. The male cases exceeded the female ones.Children aged0-5years old belonged to the high risk group. The ratio of severe caseshad significant differences in ages. The laboratory confirmed HFMD cases were causedby EV71accounting for55.5%, by CoxA16,26.6%.Conclusion The epidemiologic characteristics of HFMD in Anhui had close contact with seasonal, regional, gender and age. The mild cases of HFMD were mainly infectedwith EV71and Cox A16, and the proportion of EV71and Cox A16was declined in2012. The severe HFMD cases and deaths were mainly infected with EV71. Thegenotype of EV71in Anhui was C4a, which is highly homologous with other provincein China.
