AIMTo explore the relationship between MVD in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients with clinical parameters and living conditions.METHODSThe study comprised107patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who underwent complete excision and lymph node dissection. Anti-endothelial cell antigen (CD34) was used to stain the specimens. The results were compared with the clinicopathological parameters and3-year survival rate.RESULTSThe intratumoral MVD ranged from5.67to46(median,19.33; mean±SD,20.05±7.59). Fifty-three patients (49.5percent) were included in the group with high MVD and54patients (51.5percent) in the group with low MVD, when the patients were divided into two groups with median value of MVD. There was a significant correlation pathologic lymph node status (P=0.034). The survival rate of patients with low MVD (n=53) was significantly higher than that of patients with high MVD (n=54)(3-year survival rate:66.7vs.39.6percent; P=0.006, log-rank).CONCLUSIONMVD correlates with the pathologic lymph node status. High MVD is associated with poor3-year survival rate. Our study demonstrates that MVD could be a useful indicator of tumor survival in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients.
