Objective To explore the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9)and tissue inhibitor of metalioproteinases-1(TIMP-1) in blood serum ofmoyamoya disease patients and their relationship with intracranial hemorrhage.Method47patients suffering from moyamoya disease between June2010and September2012were admitted, including26patients with intracranialhemorrhage and21patients without hemorrhage.25sex-and age-matchedhealthy individuals were control group. Respectively, examining the expressionof MMP-9, TIMP-1in blood serum of patients and normal individuals. Results Serum MMP-9, TIMP-1concentrations in hemorrhagic and non-hemorrhagic moyamoya disease samples had significantly higher levelscompared to control (P <0.01).There was no significant difference in levels ofMMP-9, TIMP-1(P>0.05) between hemorrhagic and non-hemorrhagicmoyamoya disease group. But, MMP-9/TIMP-1in hemorrhagic moyamoyadisease group were higher compared to non-hemorrhagic moyamoya disaeasegroup; There was positive correlation between TIMP-1and MMP-9.Conclusion Maybe, there is a close relationship between MMP-9and the growth of abnormal net-like blood vessel in moyamoya disease. Perhapsimbalance of MMP-9and TIMP-1is a important reason leading to intracranialhemorrhage in moyamoya disease.
