Objectve To evaluate the effectiveness of bilateral lateral rectus recessionand unilateral recess-resect in the treatment of basic intermittent exotropia ofchildren aged from3to11years old. Methods From the june of2012to the January of2014,25patients agedfrom3to11, hospitalized in our department and underwent strabismus surgery. They were assigned randomly to two groups, group A (13cases) underwentunilateral recess-resect surgery while group B (12cases) underwent bilaterallateral rectus recession surgery. The outcomes were evaluated at least6weeksafter surgery. Surgical outcomes between the2groups were analyzed. Data wereanalyzed with SPSS13.0.Results Mean postoperative follow-up period was8.486.17months.Among the children in group A,8of the13patients (61.5%) were absolutecorrected, and5patients(38.5%) were exophoria. There was no case ofesophoria, overcorrection or undercorrection in group A. In group B,6of the12patients (50.0%) were absolute corrected,1patient(8.3%)was exophoria,4patients (33.3%)were esophoria, and1patient(8.3%) was overcorrected. There was no case undercorrected in group B. The difference of esophoria between the two groups was statistically significant. Postoperatively, the farstereo acuity of2cases in group A and1case in group B were restored to centralmacula fovea stereopsis. The far stereo acuity of6cases in group A and5casesin group B were reconstructed. There was no statistically significant differencebetween the2groups in the recovery of far stereo acuity(P>0.05). The nearstereo acuity of5cases in group A and5cases in group B were restored tocentral macula fovea stereopsis. There was no statistically significant differencebetween the2groups in the recovery of near stereo acuity(P>0.05).1case ingroup B appeared to diplopia after operation. The others had no complication. Conclusions The bilateral lateral rectus recession surgery and unilateralrecess-resect surgery are effective equally in correcting basic intermittentexotropia children aged from3to11years old....
