| Background The lavatory is necessary facilities in common life, and an important indicator for social changing and civilization progress. With the development of rural economy and living standards, strengthening of health-conscious, the desire to lavatory rebuilt is increasing strongly. The lavatory rebuilt in rural area has great significance on accelerating construction of new socialist countryside, improving rural living environment, reducing diseases spreading, improving the quality of civilization, living and health.Objectives To find out presenting problems and reasons in rural lavatory rebuilt based on questionnaire investigation to rural households and interviews to experts in4sample counties; and To put forward countermeasures and policy suggestions for improving the lavatory rebuilding in Gansu rural places.combining with socio-economic development situation and new socialist countryside construction.Methods The research data was gotten from the Gansu Provincial Health Education’s statistical report in2009-2012and field survey.4sampling counties were chosen in Gansu under the representation principle along with the conditions of lavatory types, regional economic geographical and environmental factors.180households including8towns and12villages were randomly selected by cluster sampling from those4sampling counties,2villages with rebuilt lavatories and1without each county as control. Investigation data included households basic information, lavatory types and sanitary situation, sanitary latrines hygiene factors, farmers attitudes and burden situation, and so on. The data entry was after verification through field investigation, and statistical analyzed by SPSS13.0.Results (1) there were113sanitation toilets accounted-for70.56%and53outside toilets accounted29.44%in the whole180households investigated;(2) The qualified rates on constructions latrines between sanitary latrines and unsanitary latrines separately as structure, latrine and totally are95.58%,10.55%; 47.49%,4.48%;47.79%,2.99%. Sanitary latrines’rates were higher than unsanitary latrines on these3levels.(3) The qualified rates of double urn, manure diversity, three grid septio sanitary buildings were42.42%,50%,70%;(4) On the management situation in rural area of sanitary latrines, there were30households who managed the latrines properly and accounts for26.55%;(5) On the satisfaction in lavatory rebuilt, there were68.14%households who supported the rebuilt project and satisfied with that,21.24%households who thought it unnecessary, while10.62%households who didn’t support the rebuilt and unsatisfied with the project among households which had the rebuilt toilets.(6)84.96%households who had the rebuilt toilets were affordable for lavatories, while15.04%households couldn’t afford;(7) The rates on health-related knowledge awareness between households with rebuilt lavatories and households without were61.81%,52.02%respectively, and the qualified rates on health-related behavior were76.05%,45.09%respectively;(8) The central subsidies funding programs to local on public health promoted the development lavatory rebuilt in rural area.Conclusions Throughout the carrying out on lavatory rebuilt program in rural area, the rebuilt counties in Gansu had made some achievements such as improving farmers and leads general awareness on lavatory rebuilt importance, improving sanitation situation in rural area, resulting in environmental benefits, changing on majority farmers’health-related behaviors and improving health-related awareness. Nevertheless, there are still some problems during the program practicing such as program’s funding couldn’t ensured on time, increasing farmers’burden, less attention on management and so on. |
