Radiation therapy is a more important and effective method for the diagnosis andtreatment of the malignant tumors. With the continuous development of science andtechnology, the equipment and technology of the radiotherapy have improved quicklyand greatly.Radiotherapy has been widely used in clinic. But,radioactive rays not onlykill the cancer cells but also bring a series of the toxic and side effects to thepatient.Radioactive rays can cause damage to DNA, immune system andhematopoietic system in the body. The healthcare workers may be injured byradioactive rays during the radiotherapy.Radioprotectors can alleviate irradiationdamage of body. The application of the radioprotectors is one of the most effective anddirect means to prevent and protect body from radiation damage.Currently, radioprotectors include sulfur compounds, hormones, cytokines, natural medicines, etc. However, there are some disadvantages of the chemical synthetic drug.Such as theyare so expensive and they can bring a series of the toxic and side effects to thepatient. So the chemical synthetic drug is limited in the clinical application.Naturalmedicine has become a new hot spot in the research of the radioprotectors. It is aresourceful and low-toxic natural rradioprotectors.Hibiscus sabdariffa L. is a Plantwith medicine and food characteristics.Hibiscus sabdariffa L. can eliminate fatigue andclear away heat. It has many pharmacological effects, such as anti-hypertensioneffect,anti-asthmatic effect and diuretic effect. The paper, based on the study aboutprotective effects of hibiscus sabdariffa L. polysaccharide on mice injured byX-ray,provide a basis for the use of Hibiscus Sabdariffa L. polysaccharide to radiationprotection. Objective:To research the protective effects of polysaccharide of hibiscus sabdariffaL.(PHSL)on X-irradiated mice. Methods:Fourty healthy male mice were randomly divided into normal control group (NC), irradiating control group (IC), low dose of PHSL irradiating group (300mg·kg-1·bw-1),and high dose of PHSL irradiating group(600mg·kg-1·bw-1)(n=10). The mice in PHSLgroups were treated with PHSL by gastric injection for14days.The mice in all groupsexcept NC group were irradiated with5Gy X-ray on the fifteenth day. All the micewere executed at the24th hour after radiation. Then examined the platelet counts inperipheral blood, index of spleen and thymus, the frequency of micronuclei inpolychromatophilic erythrocytes of bone marrow in mice of all groups weremeasured, the number of karyota of femur, the bone marrow DNA contents in mice, andthe endogenous spleen colony forming units were measured. After that examined theactivities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase(CAT) and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the liver tissues of each groupmice. Results:Compared with IC group, the frequency of micronuclei in polychromatophilicerythrocytes of bone marrow, the endogenous spleen colony forming units in low andhigh dose of PHSL irradiating group were decreased markedly (P<0.05);the plateletcounts in peripheral blood, the bone marrow DNA contents, index of thymus, thenumber of karyota of femur in mice were measured in low and high dose of PHSLirradiating groups were increased significantly (P<0.05). PHSL have protective effectson mice with the irradiating damage.Compared with IC group, the activity of CAT,SOD,GSH-Px in low and high dose of PHSL irradiating group were increasedmarkedly (P<0.05); the contents of MDA in low and high dose of PHSL irradiatinggroups were decreased significantly (P<0.05).PHSL can enhance the capability ofanti-oxidation in ionizing irradiated mice. Conclusion:This article studies the effects of PHSL on the immune function, hematopoieticfunction and the anti-oxidative capacity of mice injured by X-ray. It proves that PHSLcan prevent and protect hematopoietic system, immune system and anti-oxidative stressfrom radiation damage.
