Objective:To evaluate the feasibility of bedside ultrasound in confirming correct feeding tube placement of severe traumatic patients. Methods:The total admitted critical traumatic patients was115cases with91males and24females. Using bedside ultrasound to confirm the location of feeding tubes at different site of digestive tract including esophagus, gastric cardia and gastric body, comparing with the traditional methods (auscultatory method and aspirates from tube method). And then the value of ultrasound was assessed with chi-square statistics. Results:Auscultatory method and aspirates from tube method have lower sensitivity (79.6%,73.1%) and specificity (28.6%,71.4%). Bedside ultrasonic neck positioning method sensitivity (100%) and the highest accuracy (96.5%), negative predictive value of100%, and the low specificity (42.9%), compared with other methods had statistical significance (P<0.05). Ultrasonic esophagus-cardiac positioning method sensitivity (88.9%) and accuracy (89.6%) is higher, negative predictive value of36.8%, lower than ultrasonic neck positioning method, but higher than the other three kinds of methods, specificity of100%, the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05). The neck esophagus cardia positioning method can improve the positioning method that the specificity of the positioning. Conclusion:Compared with the traditional methods, the bedside ultrasound has more advantages in confirming the location of the tubes at different site of enteral route. Moreover, using ultrasound to scan the esophagus combined with gastric cardia and gastric body could increase the accuracy and complexity in location of tube placement.
