Objective: To explore the best parameters and azimuth display of thesubthalamic nucleus by using of multiple sequences and position with3.0TMRI. To explore the normal aging rule of the subthalamic nucleus byevaluating changes in the process of normal brain aging, and to lay thefoundation for the further study of subthalamic nucleus related diseases. Methods: First,3healthy right-handed volunteers(1male,2females, ageranging from20to79years old) were examined with conventionalT1,T2,FLAIR sequences and axial, sagittal and coronary position were appliedwith T2-3D-DRIVE CLEAR, T2*,SWI sequences to get the best scanningposition and parameters. Then chose134healthy right-handed volunteers,63males and71females,age ranging from20to79years old, average age49years old, median age30years old. The volunteers were grouped by gendersand age. T2coronary position perpendicular to the line AC-PC were scannedwith T2-3D-DRIVE CLEAR sequence to demonstrate the largest areas ofnucleis on both sides. The maximum diameter, minimum diameter and largestares of the subthalamic nucleus were measured by drawing ROIs manually. The SPSS13.0statistics software was used for the statistical analyse. Theindependent samples t-test and paired-t test were used to compare thedifferences in the volunteers grouped by side, gender and age to discoversubthalamic nucleus morphology with age.Results:1Applicate of Achieva3.0T MRI of the Philips company, After filteringand comparing several most commonly and typically used sequences of T1,FLAIR, SWI, T2*, T2, we find that the best sequence to show subthalamicnucleus is T2. Depending on the anatomical features of subthalamic nucleus,we select T2-3D-DRIVE CLEAR eventually. After comparing axial, sagittal and coronary positions which arecommonly used, we conclude that the coronal position perpendicular to theline AC-PC is the ideal position to show subthalamic nucleus.2To conclude the morphology on the largest cross section of subthalamicnucleus that perpendicular to the line AC-PC on coronal position, it showsthree types of morphology on coronal position: convex lens shape, claw shapeand salix leaf shape.3The maximum diameter, minimum diameter and largest ares ofsubthalamic nucleus were measured and analysed among gender, side and agegroups. Thestatistical results are as follows:There is no difference between gender groups of maximum diameter, minimum diameter and largest ares measured in coronary position.(P>0.05).There is no difference between both sides of the subthalamic nucleus ofmaximum diameter, minimum diameter and largest ares maesured in coronaryposition.(P>0.05).There is no difference between age groups of maximum diameter, minimum diameter and largest ares measured in coronary position.(P>0.05).Conclusion:1The best sequence to show subthalamic nucleus is T2and the bestposition to show subthalamic nucleus is perpendicular to the line AC-PC.2The subthalamic nucleus that perpendicular to the line AC-PC oncoronal position show three types of morphology: convex lens shape, clawshape and salix leaf shape.3There is no difference between gender groups of maximum diameter, minimum diameter and largest, no difference between both sides of thesubthalamic nucleus of maximum diameter, minimum diameter and largestares maesured, no difference between age groups of maximum diameter, minimum diameter and largest ares. There is no change with the age growing.of maximum diameter, minimum diameter and largest ares measured.
